Elisabeth Fritzl and her children have returned for the first time to the basement where they were imprisoned, the Daily Mail reports, helping police gather evidence for the trial against their father. Police wanted the family to show them precisely where and how they were held captive. The family has been cooperating with police, even crafting a thank-you poster for them.

The red poster features a centipede with the names of the family on it, and a foam-rubber butterfly. “You stood with us during the first, very hard times and made us feel safe and strong,” it reads. Police say they’ve seen first-hand how strange the outside world is to the children. “A cat, a bird—the children knew it all only from TV,” the police chief said. (Read more Josef Fritzl stories.)
