Although opinions are mixed on the future of John Edwards' political career, most analyists take a dim view, CNN reports. Clintonite James Carville believes that "his political career is in shambles," and Gloria Borger thinks his "lies are "going to put an end, probably, to his political career." Edwards' former rivals for the Democratic nomination aren't saying much.

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama expressed their sympathies for what the Edwards family is going through. Democratic strategist Paul Begala agrees that the situation must be tough on the family, but sees less political damage: "He did not violate the Geneva Convention. He did not forge a document to lead us into a war. He cheated on his wife." (More John Edwards stories.)
