"My gut feeling for a long time was this wouldn't come to fruition," Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said of the trade. "It was a cursory, monitoring situation, and things heated up real quick at the end."   (AP Photo)

The trade for Brett Favre is a coup unequalled for the New York Jets since landing Joe Namath, the charismatic quarterback who led them to their only Super Bowl title in 1969, the Daily News reports. An unlikely destination in the monthlong where-will-he-play drama, New York sealed the deal late yesterday, sending a draft pick potentially as high as the first round to Green Bay.

The deal means Chad Pennington is out after 8 years with the franchise, general manager Mike Tannenbaum said; he’ll be traded or released today. The Jets see Favre starting, with Kellen Clemens as backup, behind a revamped offensive line—and behind a publicity blitz to pave the way for a new stadium set to open in 2010, the Post adds.
