World | Madeleine McCann Pedophile Ring May Have Nabbed Maddy Police email says Belgian group targeted missing toddler By Kevin Spak Posted Aug 7, 2008 12:49 PM CDT Copied Gerry and Kate McCann, the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann, stand on the beach by an inflatable billboard covered with pictures of their missing daughter, May 28, 2007. (AP Photo/Paulo Duarte) Madeleine McCann may have been abducted by a Belgian pedophile ring, according to recently released police files. British police sent an email to their Portuguese counterparts in March, detailing a tip they’d received from an anonymous source, the Telegraph reports. The tip said the Belgian ring had agreed to nab Maddy after someone in Portugal took a picture of the 3-year-old. A call went out for a young girl 3 days before Maddie’s disappearance, the email says. But after investigating the lead with Interpol, Portugese police ruled it out for “lack of credibility,” the Guardian notes. Since then the case has been closed, but the McCanns say their private investigators will look into the tip. Read These Next The tiny bite tasted horrible—and gave her botulism.
