Atlanta druggist John Pemberton stumbled upon the concoction while he was trying to come up with a health drink. Coke officials have kept the formula secret both for competitive reasons and as a marketing gimmick. Coke's new focus on its "natural" nature is also a response to a global trend, say industry analysts. Soft-drink companies have to "work out what their future looks like in this very health-obsessed world," said one.
