Portuguese police files on the Madeline McCann investigation made public Monday include a report by an Amsterdam shop clerk of an encounter with a child who looked very much like her and who said she had been snatched by strangers "from my holiday." There was no indication whether police ever followed up on the sighting, reports the Guardian.

An English-speaking girl who called herself Maddy is said to have asked the shop assistant, in English,  "Do you know where my mummy is?" When the shop assistant pointed to the woman the girl came in with, who was out of earshot, the girl replied, "She is not my mummy. She is a stranger, she took me from my mummy." Private detectives working for the McCanns are pursuing the leads in Amsterdam. (More Madeleine McCann stories.)
