Mom Rescues Herself, Her Kids With Pocket Dial
Justin Carter   (Mesquite Police Department)

A woman and her three children were kidnapped by the mother's ex last week in Las Vegas, and police say the unnamed woman's brave actions ensured neither she nor her children were harmed. While the suspect, 34-year-old Justin Carter, allegedly drove them 80 miles away to Mesquite, police say the woman managed to "pocket dial" 911 from her cellphone and left the line open, Fox News reports. She then talked in such a way as to clue dispatchers in to what was going on—without tipping off Carter to the fact that she was on the phone with authorities.

Dispatchers did indeed figure out what was going on, and alerted officers in the area as to the location of the suspect's vehicle. He was pulled over and the mom and children were rescued. "The bravery of this woman and her children cannot be overstated. They maintained their composure, and she bravely created a plan in her head," the Mesquite police chief says. She made the 911 call just after midnight last Monday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Carter, who also allegedly tried to stab the woman before the alleged abduction, faces charges of attempted murder, attempted sexual assault, second-degree kidnappings in violation of an extended protection order, violation of an extended protection order, domestic battery with the use of a deadly weapon, coercion with the use of a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest.
