Cruising days over, storied ship will be a floating hotel in the Persian Gulf

After 40 years at sea, the glamorous passenger liner QE2 will be sold by Carnival Cruise Lines to a Dubai firm for $100 million, then turned into luxury lodgings. The company promises to restore the interior of the ship, which will be anchored off three man-made islands, and to build a museum celebrating its history.

The ballyhooed boat has crossed the Atlantic 800 times, serving some 2.5M passengers, and was pressed into service as a troop carrier during the 1982 Falklands War. “We understand the rich heritage of QE2," said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the ship's new owner. "She is coming to a home where she will be cherished,” (More Persian Gulf stories.)
