Pittsburgh phenom Sidney Crosby was voted hockey's MVP by both writers and players, adding the Hart trophy and the Pearson award to his collection. Only Wayne Gretzky received the Hart at a younger age, edging out the 19-year-old Crosby by two months. Fellow Penguin Evgeni Malkin, at twenty, won top rookie honors.

In his first season after fleeing his Russian team of Magnitogorsk, Malkin became the first player in 89 years to notch a point in each of his first six games. Runners-up for the Hart were Vancouver netminder Roberto Luongo and New Jersey's cagey veteran goalie Martin Brodeur, who set a record with 48 wins in the season. (More NHL stories.)
