Jennifer Lawrence has been keeping a deliberately low profile of late, but she is re-emerging in public with a wide-ranging interview in Vanity Fair. Among other things, the 31-year-old explains her rationale for taking a step back. "I was not pumping out the quality that I should have," she says, referring to a string of movies that were received with so-so reviews and disappointing box office numbers. "I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I'd gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn't do anything right." And, more to the point: “I didn’t have a life. I thought I should go get one.” Lawrence is now married and expecting her first child. She is also plugging a new movie, the comedic satire Don't Look Up with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Interviewer Karen Valby points out to Lawrence that her name appears first in the opening credits, and the actress is pleased to note that she was No. 1 on the call sheet. However, DiCaprio earned $30 million for the movie and Lawrence $25 million. In response to this, Valby writes that Lawrence chooses her words carefully. "Look, Leo brings in more box office than I do," she says. "I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal. But in other situations, what I have seen—and I’m sure other women in the workforce have seen as well—is that it’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.” Read the full interview for much more, including the tough decision Lawrence made in regard to her beloved dog.
