A former model and child actor has accused Timothy Hutton of raping her when she was just 14 in the 1980s—though he says he never met the woman. Canadian Sera Johnston told BuzzFeed on Monday that she was raped by her idol, and then by his friend, after meeting the Oscar-winning actor in Vancouver, Canada, where he was filming Iceman in 1983. Johnston said Hutton and two friends invited her and two friends back to Hutton's hotel, where they were served drinks. Johnston said Hutton then took her into his bedroom and raped her while one of his friends watched. Johnston, who went to the police in late 2019, said that friend raped her as well, and that she tearfully begged the men to stop. "It hurt like hell," she told BuzzFeed, which notes one of her friends recalled hearing muffled cries from inside the bedroom.

Five others said Johnston told them of the alleged encounter, including Johnston's mom, who worked as a set decorator on Iceman. But Hutton's lawyers say the actor "completely and unequivocally denies" the account following two years of failed extortion attempts, per People. They claim Hutton filed a complaint with the FBI months before Johnston went to the police, though BuzzFeed reports this was after Hutton was informed of its reporting. It adds Johnston wanted $1.5 million but they agreed only to a $135,000 "nuisance settlement." Johnston—who claims Hutton was "delighted" to learn that she was 14, the age of consent in Canada at the time—says she felt pressure to sign the deal and walked away after learning Hutton could still deny the rape. "That tells me that you don't even realize what you've done. You don’t care," she says. (More Timothy Hutton stories.)
