President Trump is known for firing people, but apparently he's also sometimes open to rehiring them. Hope Hicks, one of Trump's closest and longest-term advisers, is going back to the White House after an almost two-year absence. Hicks, 31, was communications director when she resigned in 2018; she won't be going back to the communications office but will rather be "counselor to the president." Despite long-standing reports she was "the Trump whisperer," one of the few aides who could challenge the president and who had an almost "daughterly" relationship with him, she won't be reporting directly to Trump this time but to his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, the New York Times reports. CNN reports that while Hicks has said she's only seen Trump between five and 10 times since leaving the White House, she's stayed in close contact with Kushner and other top aides.
Hicks, a former model and longtime friend of Ivanka Trump who was first with the Trump Organization before joining Trump's 2016 campaign at its inception, has been chief communications officer at Fox since last fall. In her new role, she'll be working on projects overseen by Kushner, including the president's reelection campaign. Trump's advisers say he's a bit "superstitious" and wants to re-create his successful 2016 campaign in certain ways, and at Axios, Jonathan Swan observes, "Bringing back Hicks—somebody Trump has often said he wished would return—is a sign Trump wants to be surrounded by his original loyalists heading into re-election." "There is no one more devoted to implementing President Trump's agenda than Hope Hicks," Kushner says in a statement. "We are excited to have her back on the team." (Hicks once admitted to lying for the president, and during one of her appearances before a House panel, she refused to answer 155 questions.)
