MAGA Hat Finds Its Way Onto Curb, to Trump's Delight

Except the president may not have gotten Larry David's joke

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say President Trump's tweets attract a fair share of attention, but one from this week is especially making headlines, notably because it involves a hit comedy show and a star believed to be a Trump critic. The president's Monday night post included the caption "TOUGH GUYS FOR TRUMP!," as well as a clip from the season premiere of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring show creator Larry David, who plays a fictionalized version of himself on the show. In the 30-second spot, David is seen cutting off a guy on a motorcycle while driving, which sends the biker into a rage. You can see Larry's character start to panic as the guy curses him out, but then he has an idea—he puts a red MAGA hat on as he rolls the window down to apologize, at which point the biker calms down and politely says, "Just be more careful next time, OK?"

But the Daily Beast notes that Trump posted an "out-of-context clip," and that the president may not understand or know about the real message behind the episode: that whenever Larry's character puts a MAGA hat on, most people are repelled by him and stay away, which is exactly what the character wants them to do (see some of what happens here). David once jokingly heckled Trump during the latter's hosting gig on SNL, but Cleveland.com notes David's real feelings on Trump may have been made more clear in a recent interview circulating on Twitter: When asked if he was concerned that the MAGA hat episode would turn Trump fans off to Curb, David replied, "Alienate yourselves! Go! Go and alienate! You have my blessing. I could give a f---." (More Curb Your Enthusiasm stories.)
