Didn't see Hamilton with the original Broadway cast? Well, next year, you can—kind of. The production was filmed at Manhattan's Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016, before original cast members started leaving the show, and now that film is coming to the big screen. Disney spent $75 million on the rights, and will bring the movie version of Hamilton to theaters in North America on Oct. 15, 2021, Variety reports. "I’m so proud of what [director] Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton—a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater," creator Lin-Manuel Miranda says in a statement. Per a press release cited by Vanity Fair, this will be "a leap forward in the art of ‘live capture,'" "combining the best elements of live theater and film" to transport the "audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way."

As Deadline explains, three performances were filmed, plus some "setup shots" without an audience; then "all of the footage was used to create multiple angles, to ensure the cinematic nature of the event." "Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art," Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger said in a statement. "We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience." In addition to Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, the original cast included Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton. After its theatrical run, Hamilton will head to streaming service Disney+. (More Hamilton stories.)
