Cops: Bank Teller Robs Man Who Made Big Withdrawal
Nathan Michael Newell   (Harford County Sheriff's Office)

It's usually the bank teller that gets robbed. Not so in a case out of Maryland, where police say a teller who told them he was "tired of working two jobs" invaded the home of a customer who'd withdrawn several thousand dollars, reports the Baltimore Sun. Nathan Michael Newell, 19, faces charges of home invasion, robbery, burglary, and assault after allegedly attacking the 79-year-old man—who was in intensive care with a broken leg and heart issues as of Wednesday—and his 57-year-old stepdaughter. A masked Newell allegedly rang the doorbell before forcing his way inside the Bel Air home around 8:30pm Monday, demanding to know where the money was. As he strangled the victim, the stepdaughter put the assailant in a headlock, according to court records.

They state the woman fired a gun at Newell, but it wasn't loaded. Newell allegedly escaped as the woman ran to get help. The male victim later told police that his attacker, whose mask fell off, looked like a teller at his credit union. The 19-year-old admitted to the attack following his Wednesday arrest at Freedom Federal Credit Union, claiming he'd sought the money so he could get his own place, police say. "It's almost like a reverse bank robbery," Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler tells CBS Baltimore. The credit union's president and CEO, Michael MacPherson, said he was "shocked and appalled" by the crime. He added there were no prior concerns about Newell, who'd been subjected to "rigorous" background and criminal records checks. (More robbery stories.)
