Alex Trebek is sure feeling the love following Monday's Jeopardy episode. The host called on last-place contestant Dhruv Gaur during the Final Jeopardy round, expecting to see the scribbled name of an 1890 exposé about poverty in New York. "Dhruv, you're smiling. I like that. Let's take a look at your response. Did you come up with the right one? No. What is, 'We love you Alex,'" Trebek said. "That's very kind of you. Thank you," he added, choking up. The touching moment quickly spread online along with #WeLoveYouAlex. As HuffPost puts it, "the 14 most beautiful seconds in Jeopardy history has everyone in tears."
The scene came at a tense moment. During filming, 79-year-old Trebek had told the contestants that he needed to resume chemotherapy treatment for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. "We were all hurting for him so badly," Gaur writes in a tweet. "When Final Jeopardy came up, I could've tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex," he continues. "I'm just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking." Viewers are now encouraged to donate $1 to the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research for each correct guess during Thursday and Friday's shows, per Slate. (More Jeopardy stories.)
