As others watched or took video on their phones, two New York City commuters rushed to save a 5-year-old girl Monday morning after her father jumped in front of a subway train while holding her. The father, 45-year-old Fernando Balbuena-Flores, was killed by the train at Kingsbridge station in the Bronx, but his daughter was not seriously injured. "By the sake of God, the child ended up under the train, underneath, between the wheels, this is how she was able to survive," Antonyo Love, one of the two rescuers, tells ABC7. Love and Jairo Torres jumped onto the tracks in front of the stopped train and coaxed the girl out from under it. Love says when she reached them, the only thing she was saying was "Papa, my papa." They handed her up to other commuters on the platform.
"I was paralyzed at first, just like everyone," Torres tells the New York Daily News. "But then I just jumped." He adds: "I didn't do it to be a hero ... it was immediate." The girl and both her rescuers were hospitalized with minor injuries, the New York Times reports. Love says he was a "little banged up." He says he was dismayed to see so many people "pulling out their phones" instead of helping—and by the apparent theft of his bag, which he left on the platform while he was helping save the girl. Her mother later told reporters that her daughter was in "perfect condition." "Everything is OK except that now I’m without my husband," she said. Officials say they're not sure why he decided to jump in front of the train. The driver is being treated for trauma. (More New York City subway stories.)
