On Aug. 4, 30 people walked with Al Forte from Grand Central Terminal to Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees beat the Red Sox, 7-4. The next leg of his trip is longer: He then started walking toward Fenway Park in Boston. Forte plans to be in the stands for the Yankees' visit Friday. Fenway is his immediate goal, but there's more to his mission. "I'm doing this to spread the message of praying for peace," Forte told the Providence Journal. "If we pray for peace, there will be peace, first in ourselves, then our families, then our cities, our country and the world."

Forte, 76, said he walks every day, per the Journal, through rain but not thunderstorms. He has a support vehicle: A friend picks him up at the end of the day's walk, takes him to a hotel, then returns him the next day to the spot where he had stopped. He soaks up the scenery along the way. "We’d all see this if we walked more places," Forte said Friday. The stadiums are a good 200 miles apart by highway, much longer by Forte's route. "I've walked along the coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island so far, and it’s absolutely magnificent. It’s just one scene after another." He's also encountered "very, very nice people." When they meet, Forte asks them to pray for peace. (More peace stories.)
