When Andrea Zamperoni unexpectedly missed a day at work for the first time in a decade, his colleagues at New York City's renowned Cipriani Dolci restaurant knew something must be wrong. The head chef at the Grand Central Terminal restaurant was reported missing after he failed to show up for his shift Monday and was found dead two days later, People reports. Police say the 33-year-old's body was found at the Kamway Lodge in Queens Wednesday. Neighbors tell CBS New York that the hostel, a few blocks away from Zamperoni's apartment, is "a known trouble spot for drugs and prostitution." Police say an investigation is underway and the coroner has yet to determine the cause of Zamperoni's death.
Security video obtained by CBS New York shows a handcuffed woman being taken away by police after the body was removed from the building. Zamperoni, an Italian citizen, had been head chef at the upscale restaurant for more than a year and previously worked at other Cipriani restaurants overseas, including in London, where his twin brother is also a chef. "We have sadly learned that Andrea Zamperoni, a well-respected and beloved member of the Cipriani team for many years, who went missing last Sunday has been found deceased," Cipriani Dolci said in a statement to NBC. "His brother is overcome with grief and regrets he will not be available to provide any comments. We trust the NYPD is exerting all efforts to investigate and bring clarity to this tragic situation."
