An apparent sniper is on the run in Los Angeles County after a sheriff's deputy was shot Wednesday in a parking lot, ABC News reports. Angel Reinosa, 21, was outside the sheriff's Lancaster station, an hour north of Los Angeles, when a bullet hit his bulletproof vest. "I have taken shots from the north of the Lancaster helipdad," he said over the radio, per KABC. "I think I'm hit in the right shoulder." Reinosa was taken to hospital and released—seems the bullet bounced off his vest and hit his shoulder—but is "in a lot of pain," says Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. The shooting led to a manhunt centered on a government-subsidized apartment across the street.

The four-story complex is next to a mental-health facility that's said to supply the apartment with some residents. "They let people live in our apartment complex who have mental illness," says a woman who lives in the building. "It's kind of scary because there's no security onsite 24 hours. Management is never here when things happen. The cops are in there constantly. So its not a surprise." The complex was evacuated, though residents were allowed back in by about 11pm Wednesday. It seems Reinosa wasn't specifically targeted. (More shooting stories.)
