Mystery of Epstein Associate's Whereabouts Deepens

Flags flew at half-staff across Jeffrey Epstein's private islands Wednesday as the financier's body began what is likely to be its final journey. An unnamed Epstein "associate" has claimed the body from the NYC medical examiner's office, NBC News reports, citing "a source close to the investigation." With investigations into Epstein's alleged sex-trafficking ring continuing beyond his reported suicide at Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional Center on Saturday, attention has now turned to Manchester-by-the-Sea, north of Boston, where the Daily Mail reports Epstein's "alleged procurer of victims" has been staying in her boyfriend's oceanfront mansion. Police say the owner of the home on Summer Street had requested extra patrols as TV news trucks swarmed Wednesday, per the Boston Globe. But the owner tells Business Insider that his "former friend" Ghislaine Maxwell isn't inside.

"I don't know where she is," says Scott Borgerson, CEO of maritime-analytics company CargoMetrics, who notes he's been traveling out of the country for the past week. He also denies the Daily Mail's claim that he was recently seen walking Maxwell's dog in Boston. The dog with him in photos is his own, Borgerson says. The Globe describes 57-year-old Maxwell as "a possible target of federal prosecutors," as she's been accused of recruiting some of Epstein's accusers as masseuses or arranging their encounters with the multimillionaire. Virginia Roberts Giuffre claims Maxwell "instructed me to take off my clothes and to give oral sex to Jeffrey Epstein" after finding her working as a teenage locker room attendant at Mar-a-Lago. A lawsuit filed by Jennifer Araoz, who claims she was forcibly raped by Epstein as a teenager in 2002, also names Maxwell, who previously denied wrongdoing, per the Globe.
