Megan Rapinoe spoke at a press conference Thursday, and she was not backing down from her comments about the White House—well, other than one little part. "I stand by the comments that I made about not wanting to go to the White House—with the exception of the expletive. My mom will be very upset about that," the US women's soccer team captain told reporters, a day ahead of her team's face-off with France in the Women's World Cup quarterfinals. To recap, comments Rapinoe made back in May about her lack of enthusiasm for visiting the White House should her team win the title were recently surfaced by a media outlet, leading President Trump to put Rapinoe on blast—and the two had already traded criticism before that.

"I’ll just address it head on and then we can get to the soccer questions," she said, per the Washington Post. "I think obviously [I was] answering with a lot of passion, considering how much time and effort and pride we take in the platform that we have and using it for good, and for leaving the game in a better place and hopefully the world in a better place. I don’t think that I would want to go [to the White House], and I would encourage my teammates to think hard about lending that platform or having that co-opted by an administration that doesn’t feel the same way and doesn’t fight for the same things that we fight for. So I’ll just leave it at that and I’m not interested in answering any of those [non-soccer] questions. We can get to the real reason we’re here, which is a huge game." Per USA Today, coach Jill Ellis said at the same conference, "We all support Megan. She knows that." (More Megan Rapinoe stories.)
