The opening round is over, along with the prospect of 13-0 romps. Still, the US women's soccer team defeated Spain in a close 2-1 match Monday to advance to the quarterfinals in the World Cup, reports ESPN. Megan Rapinoe scored both American goals, and both were on penalty kicks. See the first one here and the second one here. The latter goal came late, in the 71st minute, to break the tie. Team USA will now face France in Paris on Friday. The winner of that game will be the favorite to win it all, notes Deadspin. The Americans will "have to play a much more polished, efficient game if they’re going to make the semis, but for now, what they did on Monday was enough," writes Lauren Theisen.
