Game of Thrones may have aired its final episode last night, but more is coming from the fantasy world created by author George RR Martin and brought to HBO by David Benioff and DB Weiss. A prequel, which Martin revealed last fall will star Naomi Watts, is in the works; HBO has not yet confirmed a working title, but per Martin's October tweet, it seems it could be called The Long Night. People rounds up everything currently known about the project, which will take place about 5,000 years before Thrones and could feature characters mentioned in Thrones, such as Bran the Builder. Martin and Jane Goldman created the show and both will executive produce; Goldman will act as showrunner. Benioff and Weiss will not be involved.
The official description says the prequel "chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour" and will cover territory including "the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history," "the true origin of the White Walkers," "the mysteries of the East," and "the Starks of legend." As Entertainment Weekly explained last fall, there are other prequels still potentially in the works (including one that possibly explores the history of the Targaryens), but none has been officially ordered yet. Martin pointed out to EW at the time that he has written relatively little about the period the prequel will cover, which gives the show a lot of leeway. But a few things are clear: "There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens—Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series." Production on the pilot is set to begin this summer; a full series order is considered likely. (More Game of Thrones stories.)
