Michael Cohen says he has information that could help House Democrats with their investigations of President Trump—but he needs their help to stay out of prison. Attorneys for Trump's former lawyer, who is due to report to federal prison May 6, said in a letter to Democratic lawmakers Thursday that Cohen needs time to sort through a "substantial trove of new information, documents, recordings, and other evidence," the AP reports. "To date, Mr. Cohen has located several documents that we believe have significant value to the various congressional oversight and investigation committees," they wrote. The lawyers said Cohen recently gained access to files seized in a raid on his offices last year, Politico reports.

The lawyers asked Democrats to tell federal prosecutors that Cohen's date to report for incarceration should be "substantially postponed while he is fully cooperating with prosecutors and Congress," the New York Times reports. They added that they hoped cooperation could lead to a "reduced term" for Cohen, who pleaded guilty last year to charges including lying to Congress about a Trump real estate deal in Russia. BuzzFeed reports that in a 12-page memo sent with the letter, Cohen's lawyers said Trump instructed him to lie to Congress about when project negotiations finished. According to the memo, Ivanka Trump was also aware that Cohen had given false testimony. (More Michael Cohen stories.)
