A Seattle bus driver is being hailed as a hero for getting his passengers to safety during a chaotic shooting incident in the city Wednesday despite having been injured by gunfire. Police say the gunman opened fire on motorists in an apparently random attack in the Lake City neighborhood, the AP reports. Authorities say the attack began when the 33-year-old gunman walked out of his home and shot a woman while trying to steal her car, reports KOMO. He then attacked the Metro bus driven by Eric Stark. "Unprovoked, the suspected gunman fired multiple shots directly through the windshield of the bus," says King County Executive Dow Constantine. Stark, 53, was shot in the torso but was still able to back the bus out of the area and drive to safety before hitting the alarm button.

Constantine says the driver, who has been with Metro for seven years, "acted heroically in the face of extreme adversity" to protect passengers, the Seattle Times reports. Police say the gunman then fatally shot a 50-year-old man and stole his car. After driving a few blocks, the man collided with another vehicle, killing a 70-year-old man, authorities say. The suspect was taken into custody after a brief standoff. Stark and the woman shot in the first attempted carjacking were hospitalized and authorities say neither victim has life-threatening injuries. "We grieve with the loved ones of those who were taken, and we extend the good wishes and support of our city to those who were injured," Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said Wednesday night. "I am unspeakably grateful to the King County Metro driver who acted to save lives." (More Seattle stories.)
