John Oliver cannot understand why the FCC won't stop illegal, spammy robocalls, and he unleashed some poetic justice on his HBO show Sunday night. His staff created its own robocall message and began robocalling all five FCC commissioners, including agency chief Ajit Pai, reports Deadline. (You can see the video here; the revenge begins around the 15-minute mark.) Oliver says the technology is so easy that it took a staffer just 15 minutes to figure it out; assuming it worked, the commissioners have started getting a call every hour and a half saying this:
"Hi FCC! This is John from Customer Service. Congratulations! You’ve just won a chance to lower robocalls in America today. Sorry, but I am a live person. Robocalls are incredibly annoying, and the person who can stop them is you! Talk to you again in 90 minutes. Here’s some bagpipe music." (Said music then plays.) Oliver maintains the problem is only getting worse, and the FCC acknowledged as much last month. Its own report said that about half the calls people will receive on their mobile phones in 2019 will be spam, reports CNN. (More John Oliver stories.)
