More than 85,000 people have so far signed a petition to save Polar and Bear—two huskies that are now quarantined in Utah, one of which might be put down after he bit a child's hand off over the weekend. Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook says that on Sunday, the 4-year-old reached his arm, which had a sock over it, underneath a fence separating his yard from a neighbor's to play with the neighbor's dog, per the AP. That's when the dog chewed off the child's hand, as well as 2 to 3 inches of his forearm, adds Cook. People reports that the boy's dad called 911 and tried to comfort him while waiting for emergency workers to get there. "[He] was a tough little boy, wasn't even crying," Cook says, adding the child "never even shed a tear in the helicopter" used to transport him to the hospital.

Emergency responders tried to find the hand for possible reattachment, but to no avail; Cook says the dog may have "ingested" it. He adds it was the dog's "first bite incident." The person who set up the petition to save the husky says that dog and another husky are now in quarantine, and that Bear, the biter, may pay with his life. Officials say it's not certain yet if that will happen, per the AP. "Bear who was playing with what he thought was a toy he bit down too hard and didn't see that there was a child on the other side of the fence," the petition says. "With him being a dog he thought it was a game of tug of war and he bit down too hard. ... This situation is unfortunate on both sides." The boy is said to be in stable condition and doing OK.
