The Dog Was Yipping Around the Deputy's Feet. Then, a Shot

A Chihuahua who was shot in Arkansas isn't dead, but a deputy's career with the Faulkner County Sheriff's Department is. Deputy Keenan Wallace has been "relieved of his duties" after an expletive-filled video showing him shooting a dog named Reese's after responding to a call in Shiloh Estates last Friday was posted to Facebook. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has the somewhat confusing story, which it says began when a woman standing outside Doug Canady's home aimed a gun at the dog and toward his house; he told her to put the gun away. She did but called police, and a deputy responded. Canady filmed what came next, with the video initially capturing mainly audio as his camera is tilted toward the ground, recording grass as dogs run in and out of the frame.

The deputy asked Canady to approach the road and talk to him. He refused, so the deputy headed to him, with two small dogs barking and running around his feet. Then, a shot, the one that hit Reese's. "You're f-----g kidding me," Canady is heard saying, as the camera is refocused on the deputy. "I told you," says the deputy. A Facebook post from the sheriff's department described it as "an aggressive dog." Last Saturday night came a post from Sheriff Tim Ryals announcing the firing and noting Wallace "fired his service weapon ... while in close proximity to a citizen. I believe there were numerous opportunities to de-escalate the incident." KATV reports Reese's is having surgery for a broken jaw and needs to have a bone removed from her stomach. In the video Canady says the dog isn't his; a GoFundMe campaign set up for Reese's care explains she was abandoned by neighbors and has been cared for by Canady since.
