The Emmy Awards were off and running Monday night, with Kenan Thompson announcing it was the most diverse group of nominees in Emmy history before he and a group of his fellow celebrities launched into a song-and-dance number, "We Solved It," declaring diversity on TV solved. Unfortunately, at the end of the song, the performers were informed it has not actually been solved, though that didn't stop John Legend from appearing onstage to close out the number with a resounding, "We solved it!" Hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost then took the stage, opening with #MeToo-inspired jokes right off the bat: "It's an honor to share this night with the talented people who haven't been caught yet," Che deadpanned. "The one thing Hollywood needs right now is people losing their inhibitions at a work function," Jost added.
Jokes about everything from Ronan Farrow to the Roseanne to white people failing to thank Jesus in their acceptance speeches followed. Early reaction on Twitter seemed good, with one user saying, "This may be the best open ever" and another posting, "Holy shit they are killing this Emmy’s bit." The first award of the night was then given out, with best supporting actor in a comedy series going to Henry Winkler for Barry.
