Rose McGowan has released a statement on the allegations against Asia Argento that claims the person McGowan herself is dating is the one who handed over the implicating text messages that wound up on TMZ. Per Variety, McGowan says the model she's dating, Rain Dove, learned from Argento that the allegations she slept with a then-underage Jimmy Bennett were true. What's more, McGowan claims Argento sent Dove the messages that contradicted stated denials of the sexual relationship. McGowan's statement also claims "Rain also shared that Asia had stated that she’d been receiving unsolicited nudes of Jimmy since he had been 12" but that Argento never so much as told him to stop.
McGowan said she and Dove agreed the messages would be turned over to police, per The Cut. "I wasted no time. It wasn’t hard to say or support," McGowan wrote. "What was hard was the shell shock of the realization that everything the MeToo movement stood for was about to be in jeopardy.” The messages, notably a photo of a topless Argento in what appears to be a bed alongside Bennett, quickly wound up in the press and became headline news. McGowan ends her statement by reaching out to Argento, with whom she became close after they both publicly accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, directly. “Anyone can be better," she writes. "I hope you can be, too. Do the right thing. Be honest. Be fair. Let justice stay its course. Be the person you wish Harvey could have been." (More Rose McGowan stories.)
