U.S. Massacred at French Open

In their worst-ever Open showing, eight of the nine American men's tennis players at Roland Garros were defeated in one day; the ninth had his match suspended due to darkness. Third-seed Andy Roddick and eighth-seed James Blake both dropped to lower-ranked opponents in four sets each after initially leading.

Roddick failed to attack the net as he had promised, falling instead to the brute-forearmed Igor Andreev. Despite a vaunted serve, he managed just five aces. Blake watched 22 aces go by, launched by Croatian giant Ivo Karlovic. Ginepri, the Americans' last best hope at the clay-court major, remains tied one set with Diego Hartfield.
