Mystery Ailment: 11 Americans Pulled From China

In a deepening medical and diplomatic mystery, US officials have confirmed that the State Department has pulled at least 11 Americans from China who reported strange neurological symptoms, reports the New York Times. Eight of the evacuees are connected to the US consulate in Guangzhou, two are from the embassy in Beijing, and one is from the consulate in Shanghai.

US officials weren’t forthcoming with details, but the State Department said in a statement that several staff and family members had been sent home for further medical tests, and one of the evacuees had been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury. Some of the evacuees are being evaluated at the Center for Brain Injury and Repair at the University of Pennsylvania, the same facility that examined American embassy personnel in Cuba who also reported strange neurological symptoms.
