You might think trips to see Stonehenge or Egypt's pyramids are worth the thousands of dollars in airfare and other travel expenses. These are majestic, ancient structures, after all. Sadly, there's more to such famous spots than most picturesque Instagram posts suggest. Four destinations likely to underwhelm, according to the New York Times:

  • Mona Lisa at the Louvre: Good luck getting an unobstructed view of that famous smile with hordes of people flocking daily to the painting, which is kept behind multiple sheets of glass and plastic.
  • The Pyramids of Giza: You might expect to find them rising alone out of the desert. They're actually surrounded on three sides by a major city—and very close to a Pizza Hut.
  • Stonehenge: Hardly serene, the site is located on the side of a major highway. There's no touching the famous stones, either.
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa: With a 4-degree tilt, it doesn't lean as much as it once did and is pretty short, at just 190 feet tall.
