The Danish inventor on trial in the murder of a Swedish journalist who was aboard his personal submarine addressed the victim's parents in court directly on Monday. "I am really, really sorry about what happened," Peter Madsen told the mother and father of Kim Wall after the prosecution had wrapped up its case against him. Per the AP, the Dane says Wall died because of a pressure problem in the submarine he built. Prosecutors said Monday that "forensic experts have found nothing" backing that. One of the most gruesome aspects of the case, however, Madsen has confessed to. After her death, the 47-year-old said he dismembered Wall's body before he "buried her at sea." He claimed he had to because he could not lift the woman's body up the submarine tower in one piece to throw it overboard.
Wall's remains were found in plastic bags on the Baltic Sea bed weeks later. Her torso had been stabbed multiple times. The cause of her death has not been established. Madsen's defense attorney said his client should be sentenced only for the "horrible" act of cutting up Wall's body, adding that she was requesting a six-month prison term. Prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen said Wall may have been tied with her own stockings before Madsen impaled her, and that he acted with a sexual motive. In his final comments, Buch-Jepsen demanded Madsen be given life in prison—16 years in Denmark, which could be extended if necessary—or locked up in a secure mental facility for as long as he's considered a danger to others. The 12-day trial started March 8, and the verdict will be delivered Wednesday at 1pm.
