A train carrying Republican members of Congress to a retreat in West Virginia struck a garbage truck on Wednesday. One person aboard the truck is dead and another seriously injured, reports NBC Washington. No lawmakers were believed to be seriously hurt, though one was taken to the hospital, according to NBC. Among those on the train was House speaker Paul Ryan, who was uninjured.
Politico reporter Rachael Bade tweeted a photo of the truck and said that doctors-turned-congressmen Roger Marshall and Larry Buschon were helping attend to the injured. Sen. Jeff Flake says he helped move an injured person to a stretcher, but he said another person died at the scene. "They worked on him for quite a while but they could not revive him," Flake said. The accident occurred in Crozet, Va., near Charlottesville, as the Amtrak train was ferrying the lawmakers to a retreat in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., per Bloomberg. (More train accident stories.)
