Jerusalem Plans to Thank Trump by Using His Name

Some 128 countries may be no fan of President Trump's decision on Jerusalem, but Israel obviously is, and it plans to demonstrate its appreciation in a bricks-and-mortar kind of way. The AFP reports that Transportation Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday gave the green light to a $700 million plan to further extend a not-yet-open high-speed rail line from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, bringing it into the Jewish Quarter of the Old City and all the way to the Western Wall. There, a new station will be named "Donald John Trump" in a nod to the president's "brave and historic decision."

The AP reports the plan, which needs final approval, would take four years to complete; the Tel Aviv-to-Jerusalem line itself will open in 2018 and trim the travel time between the cities to 30 minutes. A rep for the ministry expects final approval on the extension to come in 2018 "barring major complications," as the AP puts it—and as it explains, major complications are possible. That's because the route will require excavations near a contested holy site, which is likely to trigger Palestinian opposition. (More Jerusalem stories.)
