A police officer hoping for a new career in India's civil services was arrested Monday after allegedly cheating on an examination with the help of his wife and a whole host of gadgets, the Hindustan Times reports. Safeer Karim's alleged cheating was especially surprising as, per NDTV, he had started a business coaching others taking the civil service exam. Karim had passed the first round of the examination to join the Indian Administrative Service earlier this year, but the Times of India reports he had drawn the attention of the Intelligence Bureau, which suspected him of cheating. Karim was under surveillance when he took the second round Monday.
Karim handed over a cellphone prior to the exam but allegedly had another hidden in his sock. Police say he also smuggled in Bluetooth earpieces and a tiny camera hidden in a shirt button. Karim allegedly used the camera, which was connected to Google Drive, to send images of the test to his wife, Joicy Joyce, who relayed the answers via the earpieces. If he couldn't hear her, Karim wrote something on a piece of paper and Joyce repeated the answer more loudly, police say. Joyce and an alleged accomplice were arrested Tuesday. Karim could be dismissed by the Indian Police Service. Friends say Karim was worried he had no future with the police after he failed fitness tests due to an unspecified accident. The examination for the civil service is known as being exceedingly difficult, with only one in 400 making the cut. Members of the IAS go on to serve in bureaucratic positions.
