A number of drivers on an Oklahoma interstate pulled over Saturday when they saw a disturbing sight on the side of the road: a baby strapped into a car seat. "I said, 'Please tell me that’s not what we think it is,'" Alexis Harrison, one of the people to pull over, recalls to KOCO. Fortunately, the infant was asleep and unharmed, though he was only about 10 feet from the busy road on a 91-degree day. Emergency workers estimate he had been there about 30 minutes.

A birth certificate, about $5,500 in cash, and Social Security cards were found near the baby, who is estimated in various articles to be anywhere from one to three months old, and authorities ultimately tracked down the mother. She is being evaluated at a hospital and police are still investigating, ABC News reports. The Oklahoma County district attorney will decide whether to file charges. Dozens of people have asked about adopting the baby, who is safe and in good health, a Department of Human Services spokesperson tells NewsOK. She suggests anyone interested apply to become a foster parent: "Children come into our care every single day on an emergency basis." (More Oklahoma stories.)
