Louise Linton had her "let them eat cake" moment, but now she's eating crow. The Scottish actress and new wife of Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin issued a short apology Tuesday after posting a picture of herself on Instagram disembarking from a military jet (she'd accompanied Mnuchin on one of his work trips to Kentucky), tagging all the luxury items she was wearing, then ripping into a commenter who took her to task for it. "I apologize for my post on social media [Monday] as well as my response. It was inappropriate and highly insensitive," she says in a statement from her publicist, per CNN.
Linton, who the New York Times says was "fresh from a European vacation punctuated by rides at SoulCycle and trips to the Hamptons," had been replying to a comment by Oregon mom Jenni Miller. Miller tells CNN Linton's post was "incredibly offensive." "She went to a state where one in five people lives in poverty and many children don't know where their next meal is coming from," Miller says. "Instead of helping in some way, she chose to brag about her outlandishly expensive clothes." But she says Linton's apology is a "good outcome" and is now asking her new Instagram followers to donate to a friend who had a stroke. "I'm trying to make some good out of this situation," Miller says. More on Linton's childhood growing up in a castle and her penchant for jewels at CNN. (More Louise Linton stories.)
