California dreamin' may be just that, especially when it comes to being able to afford to live there. 24/7 Wall St. examined data from real estate company ATTOM Data Solutions—including wage info, monthly homeownership expenses, and median fair-market rent—to figure out which US counties offer the least affordable housing markets compared to the average wages in that region, and the Golden State appears out of reach in many areas except for those bringing in the big bucks. Here, the 10 least affordable markets, plus the average percentage of one's wages spent on housing there:

  1. Marin County, Calif.; 98.6%
  2. Santa Cruz County, Calif.; 90.8%
  3. Maui County, Hawaii; 86.8%
  4. Napa County, Calif.; 80.0%
  5. Kings County, NY; 78.4%
  6. San Luis Obispo County, Calif.; 76.9%
  7. Honolulu County, Hawaii; 75.2%
  8. Monterey County, Calif.; 75.1%
  9. Sonoma County, Calif.; 73.2%
