Plenty of people want Stephen Colbert fired over a joke he made about President Trump, but Colbert has at least one comedic heavyweight in his corner: Jon Stewart. Stewart appeared on the Late Show Tuesday and defended Colbert's "potty mouth," noting, "I do not understand why in this country we try to hold comedians to a standard we do not hold leaders to. It's bizarre." He added even a joke "not respectful enough to the office of the presidency" can only "insult," whereas Trump's words "can injure." The show as a whole was a mini Daily Show reunion, with Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Rob Corddry, and Ed Helms appearing in what the Daily Beast calls "a bold show of force in defense of satire."

The gang performed a skit about Colbert's last day at the Daily Show in 2005. "There's never going to be another president this good for comedy," Bee said of George W. Bush, per the New York Daily News. "This guy does something ridiculous, like, at least once a month." Of Colbert's exit, Helms added, "It's like Beyonce leaving Destiny's Child. We're never going to hear from her again." Stewart later opened up about farm life in New Jersey, saying "there are nights where I find myself sort of impotently shouting into the abyss." But while there are aspects of the Daily Show that he misses, he says time with family is something "I wouldn't give up." (The FCC is investigating Colbert's joke.)
