A Virginia man was arrested after treating his daughter's gunshot wound with a first aid kit instead of calling 911, police say. Newport News resident Maurice Jones, 30, was jailed Sunday on child abuse and gun charges, the Daily Press reports. Police spokesman Brandon Maynard says Jones told police his daughters were running around when his 6-year-old daughter accidentally knocked a handgun off the bed. It hit the floor, causing the gun to fire. Both Jones and the 6-year-old were shot, reports the AP.

Police say Jones didn't initially call 911 or take his daughter to the hospital. Instead, he treated her wounds with a first aid kit. Maynard says police found out about the shooting when they received a call requesting a welfare check on the girl Sunday. When they arrived at the Jones residence, a woman told them that the girl received the gunshot wound two weeks earlier, on Feb. 26. Child Protective Services was notified and the child was hospitalized, the AP reports. (Read more Virginia stories.)
