New White House press secretary Sean Spicer addressed numerous subjects during Monday's briefing but one subject didn't come up: His long-running, one-sided feud with Dippin' Dots ice cream. It emerged over the weekend that Spicer has targeted the flash-frozen ice cream balls in his personal Twitter feed multiple times over the years, starting with a 2010 tweet in which he disparaged its claim to be the "ice cream of the future," Politico reports. The following year, he slammed the brand again, and later linked to a Wall Street Journal story about its financial difficulties. In 2015, he once again scoffed at the claim to be the ice cream of the future, this time because they had run out of the vanilla flavor at a baseball game.
Dippin' Dots responded with an open letter on Monday, saying it wants to be "friends not foes," stressing that it is "made in Kentucky by hundreds of hard-working Americans in the heartland of our great country," and offering to treat the White House and the press corps to an ice cream social. Media relations manager Billie Stuber tells NPR that the company believes ice cream should never get too political, but they are serious about the ice cream social. "We were just counting how many pallets we would need to deliver to feed the White House," she says. "So I really hope he calls us on that one." (More Sean Spicer stories.)
