Behind eight solid innings from Justin Verlander, the Tigers finished a sweep of the swooning Cardinals, who at nine games under .500 reside near the basement of the hapless NL Central. St. Louis had taken the World Series from Detroit last year, 4-1, and the Tigers acknowledged that their revenge was both sweet and insufficient.

First baseman Sean Casey said, "It will never be a payback, unless it's in the World Series."  Detroit manager Jim Leyland regretted whomping on his friend Tony La Russa's club: "To be honest, I wish we didn't play them this year." (More MLB stories.)
