USA Today recalls how Jimmy Kimmel's 2012 hosting gig at the Emmys didn't wow the masses, but the late-night host apparently redeemed himself Sunday at this year's awards show, earning an "affable" rating from the newspaper, which said "he hit the mark right all night" and had bits that were more "good-natured than nasty." What made Kimmel stand out:

  • Dominic Patten writes for Deadline he agrees Kimmel did a respectable job, noting he should be "considered as a semi-permanent host." Patten says Kimmel was "fast on his feet" and "injected the bite and buzz that Andy [Samberg's] stint last year … sorely lacked." As one of Patten's colleagues noted: "Why hasn't he hosted the Oscars yet?"
  • In 2014, Ellen DeGeneres ordered pizza for the audience; this year, Jimmy Kimmel's mom made PB&J sandwiches—7,000 of them or so, the AP reports. The kids from Stranger Things handed out the evening's snack in paper bags, while Kevin Spacey chowed down in the kitchen. "If you're allergic to peanuts, I guess this is goodbye, because we could only afford one EpiPen," Kimmel joked, per the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, per Mashable, Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani tweeted the content of his note from Kimmel's mom, Joan: "Have fun tonight! Win or lose, your mom will always love you. Don't get drunk. Xoxoxo Joan (Jimmy's mom)."

  • Matt Damon came out to heckle Kimmel, right after Kimmel's late-night show lost to John Oliver's. "Did you win?" Damon asked Kimmel, gnawing on an apple in a Good Will Hunting homage, per Variety. When Kimmel admitted he hadn't, Damon offered his condolences: "I'm sorry, this is so humiliating. You lost and you now you have to stand out here in front of everybody."
  • With so many awards going to The People v. OJ Simpson, it was impossible for Kimmel not to reference the man underlying the series. "What a night for OJ so far, huh?" he noted, per ABC7. "I wonder if he's having a viewing party." Here, the Hollywood Reporter lists its top 20 favorite Kimmel lines of the night.
