Maryland is top, Mississippi is bottom

The median income in Maryland is a far cry from the median income in Mississippi, according to 24/7 Wall St. Its new ranking (based on this new 2015 Census Bureau data) shows the richest and poorest states in the country, based on median household income in 2015. The top and bottom of the scale:

Richest:

  1. Maryland: $75,847
  2. Hawaii: $73,486
  3. Alaska: $73,355
  4. New Jersey: $72,222
  5. Connecticut: $71,346

Poorest:

  1. Mississippi: $40,593
  2. Arkansas: $41,995
  3. West Virginia: $42,019
  4. Alabama: $44,765
  5. Kentucky: $45,215
