Actor and comedian Aziz Ansari, the son of Muslim immigrants, wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times this week on "why Trump makes me scared for my family," focusing on the dangers of the candidate's "vitriolic and hate-filled rhetoric." “It’s visceral, and scary, and it affects how people live, work, and pray," the Parks and Recreation and Master of None star writes. "It makes me afraid for my family.” Ansari recalls calling his mom after the Orlando shooting and telling her not to go to a mosque that day because he was afraid for her safety. “I realized how awful it was to tell an American citizen to be careful about how she worshiped.” But he says “prejudice is reaching new levels" thanks to Trump and others like him.

Ansari also points out the ridiculousness of that kind of prejudice. Even if every one of the 1,000 people currently being investigated by the FBI as possible terrorists turned out to be a Muslim extremist, that's only 0.03% of Muslim Americans. And yet by saying Muslim Americans "know who the bad ones are," Trump is implying that millions of people are complicit in terrorism. Ansari points out that more than half of the mass shootings since Sept. 11 were done by white men. “I doubt we’ll hear Mr. Trump make a speech asking his fellow white males to tell authorities 'who the bad ones are,' or call for restricting white males’ freedoms.” Read the full piece here.
