11 Notable Names on Time's 'Most Influential' List
Making an impact around the world.   (Time, via Today.com)

What do Angela Merkel, Adele, and Internet star PewDiePie have in common? They've all made Time magazine's annual "100 Most Influential People" list. Divvied up into five categories—pioneers, titans, leaders, artists, and icons—the magazine's picks each have a profile written by another notable person: Lena Dunham writes up Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for example, while Lorne Michaels takes on Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. Today.com describes the criteria for making the cut as being someone who's "inspired others, positively or negatively" and notes that 40 women made this year's index. Ten of the more notable selections (11 people in total), along with the author of their profiles:

  1. Leonardo DiCaprio, who nabs one of the six coveted cover spots, written up by Secretary of State John Kerry
  2. Caitlyn Jenner, by Wayne Maines, Air Force veteran and dad to a transgender daughter
  3. Pope Francis, by Joe Biden
  4. Writer Ta-Nehesi Coates, by Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson
  5. Felix Kjellberg, aka Internet star PewDiePie, by South Park co-creator Trey Parker
  6. NBA star Steph Curry, by ballet pioneer Misty Copeland
  7. Hamilton writer and star Lin Manuel-Miranda, by JJ Abrams
  8. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, by Bill and Melinda Gates
  9. Bernie Sanders, by ex-Labor Secretary Robert Reich
  10. Donald Trump is on there, too, written by GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina
(Full list here. Also notable: Only one presidential candidate failed to make the cut.)
