US stocks gave up an early gain and closed slightly lower as investors hold dim expectations for company earnings. The Dow Jones industrial average had been up more than 150 points but faded in the afternoon Monday. The average slipped 20 points, or 0.1%, to 17,556. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gave up five points, or 0.3%, to 2,041. The Nasdaq composite lost 17 points, or 0.4%, to 4,833. Big US companies are reporting their quarterly results this week. Banks including JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo report later in the week, and railroad operator CSX comes out on Tuesday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was little changed at 1.72%.
